The Machrie

The Machrie project began 2011 when David was commissioned to modernise the Links course on Islay originally designed by Willie Campbell in 1896. The original layout consisted of many blind shots with holes being played over sand dunes. David re routed the golf course whilst maintaining the site of many of the original greens, now being played to from new directions to maximise the natural topography of the land. Raw Golf Design oversaw the installation of a comprehensive irrigation system to the golf course. The Machrie will now provides a true test of Links golf for the next century.

Raw Golf Design was heavily involved in the design and planning process for a 47 bedroom hotel , lodges, clubhouse and green keepers facility. In preparation for the opening of the hotel in summer 2018, RAW Golf structured the full golf operation of the facility. Raw have designed a state of the art golf academy including short game area along with a 6 hole Par 3 course and an 18 hole ‘Himalayas’ style putting green.
